Ivy Mawuse Ayetor’s ‘Cry For Mercy’

A CRY FOR MERCY

Oh Merciful Lord

When I look at the beautiful pot

And remember it contains so much rot

I lift my mute mourn

For I know I am like a dry shore

May Thou my ceaseless fort be

Though much disappointed you have been

With much sorrow my chest I beat

That I may retrace my steps to Thee

If only Thou will show me mercy

Although I have a heart so dirty

To You I will bow daily

And go my way making merry.

BACKGROUND FOR “A CRY FOR MERCY”

The poet uses symbols in describing her sinful condition and in expressing the consequential sorrow. The

reader’s attention is drawn to the fact that the poet is aware of the filth sin has created and pleads with

God to be merciful.

The poet articulates her desire to be reconciled to God.

Have you drifted away from the Most High?

Do you also desire to make things right?

If your answer is yes then He’s waiting for you to run back to Him. God is merciful.
